Val shouts “Go!” before Angel is ready. The first stepping stone is slick, and Angel’s quiet no stays stuck inside.
A brave choice
Angel steps back to shore and says “Stop,” stronger than she expected. She asks for a practice crossing first.
A happy turn
Val keeps her cheers to a whisper. Later they race home, and every step Angel takes belongs to her.

And the moral of the story

“A kind voice can still be a strong one.”
